12/21

Roosters and what sounds like chanting coming from a mosque starts about 4am. I'm just naturally waking up around 4am anyway.

8:30 - meeting with principal Joe Mensa-Eshun. He explained about how KTI works. They offer 14 industry programs including refergeration, auto mechanics etc. A group of students came in. We find they all know the basic Microsoft Office programs. But not much beyond that. Mr. Mensa-Eshun suggested we divide into hardware and software classes. Salihou taught hardware and I, software.

I ended up talking mostly about Photoshop, using Gimp on the laptop to demonstrate concepts. It was a big hit when Gameli took a photo of one of the girls, I loaded it into the laptop, then the students took turns retouching the photo with 'smear' type tools. Salihou talked about networking and hardware.

Teaching my group at Kumasi Technical Institute. Most of the boys all want to learn hardware, and the girls, software.

The school provided us with lunch (fish or chicken and rice). We met with Mr. Mensa-Eshun after the class and described how it went.

Called Dr. Joe's niece Abena, and arranged to meet her at 6. Took the truck to have the starter repaired. We needed at least another towel since I'd forgotten to bring mine and they don't provide them in the teachers lounge. I noticed the various sellers coming through the car repair compound of the street we were in, and sure enough a nice lady with a load of towles on her head came through. -- After we went trekking to find one and were unsucessful.

Theresa (the younger, actually named Elizabeth) and a driver came to see us and drove us to their compound a few miles away. Dinner at their large house. Abena's husband, Max is in the pharmacy business and lives in Florida part of the year.
