Church day. But first, George needs to tell us our Ewe names based on the day of the week we were born. Being male and born on a Tuesday, my name is Komala. This is because the way they do the offering is a kind of competition between the days of the week.
Table 1. Names for day of the week people born on
Day | Male names | Female names |
---|---|---|
Sunday | Kwesi | Akos |
Monday | Kudjo | Adjo |
Tuesday | Komla | Abra |
Wednesday | Kweku | Akua |
Thursday | Yao | Yawa |
Friday | Kofi | Afi |
Saturday | Kwame | Ama |
The kids come over to lead us in. We were ushered into the front right part of the church. It is a fairly large unfinished building with a fluorescent light hanging from the ceiling. Open air, with wooden pews. The children sit on planks in the back. Normally the men sit on the left side and the women on the right. Things were different since we're there though.
The service was mostly like church services in America, except there is no organ - all the music is drums and shakers - and the beautiful voices. We were a bit surprised when the vegetables and cain came out - for the auction! Then out came a live chicken! Tony had the winning bid.
For lunch we had Bambara beans and Abolo (the dumpling bread). After lunch, we were lead to the high priests compound for another colorful performance by the kids.
Noah and I rode to see Michael in Vakpo, since he invited anyone who wanted to come see his tree house project. It was getting late, and Akpene was quite concerned that we get back before dark. Cars on the road go very fast in these parts. And because of the large potholes, sometimes drivers have veer off into the side of the road with no notice to avoid them. It's a lot worse at night :-) We didn't have time to see the tree house project (we did later though). We met Michaels friend, who has some wood carvings. We rushed back so we wouldn't be out after dark.
Mary wanted me to take a picture of her cooking earlier, but it was after dark by that time. I didn't think the photo would work out, but here it is. She and Rose are cooking up the goat from earlier. We had it with rice.
Someone mentioned that Ghanaians have some interesting proverbs, so I thought that might be something to help our understanding the language. Emmanuel, Laura, Meliki, Jonas & a few others and I start out that way, but it turns into a sweet sing song.
